The Chevrolet 400 was produced from 1970 to 1980, and identifying it is a matter of locating and referencing the engine code suffix. Step 1. Open the hood and view the engine from the front on the passenger side. Step 2 . Look for the engine code. According to the Chevy-Camaro website, the code is located on a machined pad directly forward of the passenger-side cylinder head, on the front of ...

· Both at 75*F, I am getting about a 250 OHM discrepancy (750 + 500 OHMS) between the sensors, and am using an IR thermometer held about 8" from the aluminum manifolds, aimed at the base of the sensors. Also, both brass sensor bases read "0" OHMS to an intake bolt, indicating a good ground. When the temperature gauge reads @ 3/4, the IR ...

· The thermostat housing is a bad location for the temp gauge sender. If the thermostat fails or if there is an air bubble, the gauge won't tell you that you are destroying your engine from overheating because it is downstream from the thermostat. Putting emission controls sensor on the thermostat housing is one thing, but putting something that is supposed to tell you that you are killing your engine …

· I have the fan turn on switch installed in the intake manifold (190-205?) and the temp sensor probe for the temp gauge in the drivers side cylinder head (aluminum) by the #1 cylinder. I checked with a infrared thermometer and the temps were close. My fan turns on at 205 to 210 on my gauge and the engine runs at 175 all day no matter what the ambient temp. I would have liked to have both sensors …

· Nothing quite like being 400 miles from home in your new car and seeing the oil pressure drop to zero. Anyhow, the cure was similar to Sammy's. I had little brother have the oil field supply shop make up a 10-12" high pressure hose, pulled the extension bar, mounted the hose in it's place and mounted the new - #3 - sender on the end of that and Adel clamped it to the engine lift bracket.

· The thermostat location is the last point coolant reaches before heading for the radiator and therefore represents the average temp if you will of all the hot and cold spots in the engine. I'd rather know that number for everyday driving. If you are into something like roundtrack competition or other prolonged duration power runs it might help to know where your hot spots are but I am not a racer. My …

· What I did find with the temp sensor in the head was, a hot engine turned off, then ignition turned on would read much higher due to latent heat in the head transfering to the water with no circulation. Once the engine was restarted, the temp corrected very quickly. Other locations also had the same effect to a lesser degree, except for temps in the top of the radiator.
· The car wasn't actually overheating but the gauge would show it so we moved the sensor to the manifold and it started to jive with the t-stat. Another factor may have been that the headers were close to the port on the head too.

· My new truck has a SBC 383, cam, Edelbrock carb. No emissions, no sensors. I would like some input on the correct temp thermostat to run.
